Cardiomegaly


Means larger heart size or thicker than normal.
Causes
  1. Hypertension
  2. Heart valve disease
  3. Cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease)
  4. Pulmonary hypertension
  5. Pericardial effusion
  6. Anemia
  7. Abnormal thyroid
  8. Hemochromatosis (iron overload)
  9. Cardiomegaly might occur due to viral infection around the heart, kidney disease that requires dialysis, the use of alcohol or drugs, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), or genetic diseases or to pregnant people who are close to giving birth."
Symptom

"Cardiomegaly does not usually present with any symptoms, but without treatment can lead to symptoms of heart failure. Some patients may have mild symptoms for many years and some may have acute and severe symptoms. Possible symptoms include:

  1. Fast breathing, wheezing
  2. Palpitations
  3. Dizziness, fatigue, weakness
  4. Weight gain
  5. Swelling in the legs
  6. Unable to lie prone due to chest discomfort
  7. Coughing, especially when sleeping
